How Does the Trenchless Sewer Pipe Repair Process Work?

Trenchless pipe repair as well as our other solutions have been on the market for decades, but only recently began gaining traction as the preferred method for sewer repair at residential and commercial properties. Unlike traditional repairs, trenchless methods are non-invasive in that they do not disrupt surrounding infrastructure and landscaping and can be completed entirely underground. In the past, repairing your sewer line resulted in damage to your property and additional remediation costs.

Today, Bob Oates is the leading plumbing, sewer and drain cleaning and repair contractor in the Seattle Tacoma area, helping clients avoid the headache and struggle that accompanies traditional sewer pipe repair methods. Trenchless sewer repair eliminates the need for digging and instead employs the use of pipe bursting or pipe lining. Bob Oates technicians have the skills and equipment to complete both types of trenchless repair.

What Is Pipe Lining?

Cured-in-place-pipe (CIPP) lining is a method of trenchless pipe replacement that involves using an epoxy resin to replace or renew existing water or drain pipes. An epoxy resin hardens into a new pipe within the old pipeline, making this method ideal for clients who would rather forgo heavy equipment on their property.

Before pipe lining can be completed, the pipeline must be thoroughly cleaned. Our trenchless plumber will locate an existing access point to the plumbing on the property and perform an inspection. Once the inspection is complete, we use hydro-jetting to clean out the pipeline to ready it for repair. Meanwhile, the epoxy resin is soaked into a felt liner. Once the pipeline is clean, the liner is inserted into the pipeline via the access point. It is pulled through and inflated until it hardens into a new pipe.

The advantages of pipe lining extend beyond their convenience. Most repairs can be completed in less than 24 hours. Our UV curing method can restore your pipe in as little as one hour. The epoxy pipe is environmentally-friendly and lasts approximately fifty years. Even better, it’s anti-corrosive and root-resistant.

On this trenchless sewer repair job, Bob Oates techs installed 70’ of 4” liner using blue light curing restoring service in hours with no digging required. Traditional methods can take up to 48 hours and involve major excavation.

When you choose pipe lining, you choose an option that likely will last you the rest of your life. Imagine only ever needing to repair your sewer line once. This drain and sewer pipe lining service is versatile and capable of fixing a variety of different problems inside of pipes ranging from 2-to-12 inches, as well as pipes made from concrete, clay, cast iron, and PVC, making it a preferred choice for many customers across Washington.

We can line any pipe. For instance we recently completed a 22” heating duct lining in Bremerton that stretched 75’ under a customers home. We used a double liner for strength. Robotic cameras and specialized cutting tools helped us in reinstating each of the heat registers…we can line anything!

What Is the Sewer Pipe Bursting Process?

When considering trenchless sewer repair pros and cons, it’s a good idea to ask yourself if you know how the sewer system works or how to do an installation job. If you have a problem, such as a leak or a damaged pipe, and don't know the system, you should hire a trained professional.

Pipe bursting is a sewer repair method that involves replacing the existing pipeline with new pipes. As a trenchless method, it occurs entirely underground: a hydraulic ram splits the old pipe in place and a new HDPE pipe is pulled through the old pipe, resulting in a completely new sewer system. Like pipe lining, pipe bursting results in little to no damage to the surrounding landscape, making it a great option for anyone seeking a quick, clean solution.

During pipe bursting, the existing pipes are made to “burst” underground. Hydraulic equipment, including a hydraulic pulling machine and cables, are used to pull new pipes into a place where the old pipes once rested. The new, stronger piping is designed to last for decades. Unlike traditional repairs, there is no need to dig trenches. The technicians use two access points to insert and pull the pipes through, keeping most of the process underground. When pipe lining is not the first choice, pipe bursting is highly recommended. It is also the method of choice for anyone seeking more traditional piping materials.

How Are Trenchless Drain Line Repairs Performed?

Before we perform repairs to your sewer pipes, Bob Oates technicians perform a professional sewer camera inspection, which allows us to diagnose the conditions of the pipeline. Our techs will be able to recommend the best solution for you. A high-pressure water jetter may be employed to clean the pipe in preparation for the epoxy lining. Most pipes can be repaired using trenchless methods.

Should you choose trenchless repair, you have the option of pipe bursting or cured-in-place pipe lining services. Pipe bursting involves blasting through existing pipelines underground and using machinery to pull new pipes into place. Cured-in-place pipe lining is also performed underground and is essentially creating a “pipe within a pipe.”

Why Trenchless Sewer Line Fixes Are So Important

Sewer repairs are an unfortunate reality here in the Pacific Northwest. Because of this, we have employed the latest technologies for trenchless repairs to make it as simple as possible while also keeping the cost of trenchless sewer repair low.

At Bob Oates, we offer IPT, Nu-flow, Perma-liner and Hammerhead pipe lining systems. We also offer pipe bursting and full trenchless sewer line replacement. By having and using all of these technologies we are able to do all repairs in-house with no subcontractors to keep the trenchless sewer repair cost down. This enables us to help keep pricing under control.

Trenchless repairs save clients time and money because they can be performed much quicker than traditional repairs. Our valued customers do not have to deal with the hassle and cost that come with property repair after traditional, old-fashioned open-trench repairs are performed. Clients can choose from a variety of repair solutions when they call Bob Oates, a leader in the sewer repair industry.

The Benefits of Choosing Bob Oates for Trenchless Drain Line Repairs

At Bob Oates, we love what we do, but we understand that not everyone is as passionate about sewer repair as we are. Clients looking for repairs to be completed as quickly as possible benefit from choosing trenchless because both pipe bursting and pipe relining take far less time to complete than traditional repair methods.

Home and business owners alike appreciate the fast turnaround. If you own a business, trenchless repair methods allow you to continue your operations mostly unaffected, so you won’t need to close up shop. As a homeowner, you’ll enjoy more privacy and less interruption.

Our commitment to quality, convenient work saves our customers time and money on remediation costs to their landscaping. As a result of the absence of additional costs related to remediating property, trenchless pipe repair is often the most cost-effective solution and is a worthy long-term investment.

FAQs About Trenchless Sewer Repair

What is trenchless sewer repair?

Trenchless sewer repair is a method of fixing damaged underground pipes without digging long trenches. It uses techniques like pipe lining and pipe bursting to restore your sewer line with minimal disruption to your yard or driveway.

Is trenchless sewer repair available for Seattle side sewers?

Yes. Trenchless repair is commonly approved for Seattle side sewers when conditions allow. We work closely with the City of Seattle to obtain the necessary permits and follow local codes.

How long does a relined sewer pipe last?

A properly installed cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liner can last several decades. Lifespan depends on factors such as the original pipe’s condition, soil movement, and water chemistry.

When is trenchless sewer repair not an option?

If a sewer line is severely collapsed, has major offsets, or lacks suitable access points, trenchless repair may not be possible. In these cases, traditional excavation may be required.

Will trenchless sewer repair damage my landscaping or driveway?

Trenchless methods use small access points instead of open trenches, so most landscaping, hardscaping, and other features remain intact compared to conventional excavation.
