There are many different types of plumbing pipe materials on the market today. If you are a homeowner, it is important to know about them to make the best decision for your home. Sure, you can always ask your trusted plumber in Seattle but knowing the basics has its benefits.
Bob Oates Sewer and Rooter gives you a run down of the most common plumbing pipe materials and what makes them suitable for plumbing services.
PVC Pipes
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a white or light-colored plastic that is commonly used for potable water lines. It is strong and durable, making it an excellent choice for both indoor and outdoor applications. PVC is also resistant to corrosion due to its composition, and since it’s widely used and available, it’s easy to source in case of an emergency plumbing problem.
Copper Pipes
Copper is popular for plumbing because it is durable and has natural corrosion resistance. Copper pipes are non-toxic and are ideal for plumbing repairs and replacements.
PEX Pipes
PEX (polyethylene) is a plastic-type material that our plumbing company regularly works with. It is flexible so that it can be used in various applications. PEX pipes are available in both rigid and flexible varieties. PEX pipes are more expensive than PVC pipes but offer some advantages, such as thermal resistance.
Galvanized Steel Pipe
While a little outdated, galvanized steel pipes were the ideal material for water supply pipes. Widely used in homes built before the 1960s, galvanized pipes have a protective zinc coating that helps prevent rust and corrosion.
Stainless Steel Pipes
Galvanized pipes do need to be replaced after their 50-year lifespan, and stainless steel is the ideal upgrade. Stainless steel is non-reactive and will not leach chemicals to whatever it is transporting, making it an optimal choice for water or gas supply.
Each plumbing material has its unique benefits and drawbacks. Contact Bob Oates Sewer & Rooter so we can help you choose the right type of pipe for your needs and provide expert services.
