Shower mold is one of the most common problems to pop up in any home. Good news though, it’s easy to remove and prevent it from growing back.
Mold loves to grow in dark, damp places & unfortunately your bathtub fits both of those descriptions. The lack of ventilation and lingering moisture after a shower is a perfect growing ground for icky black mold. It’s not to be ignored. Exposing yourself and others to mold is a heath hazard, which can cause allergies and breathing problems.
Removing Mold from the Tub
One way to remove mold is by spraying white vinegar onto the effected area. Vinegar has a mild acidity, making it inhospitable and reportedly killing 82% of mold species.
Here is what you do.
- Spray the vinegar onto the moldy surfaces and let it sit for an hour.
- After the hour is up, scrub the area clean & use hot water until the smell is gone.
- Dry with a towel.
Another way to remove mold is by making a inexpensive paste. Just add these ingredients, paste onto the mold, let it sit for an hour, and scrub it off.
- 1 teaspoon of liquid soap
- 1 cup baking soda
- Few drops of essential oil (peppermint, lavender, citrus, etc.)
- Enough water to form a paste.
If you still can not remove the mold you might have to replace the caulk or grout.
Preventative Measures
• Good air flow in your bathroom is important because it drys mold out. Run your ventilation fan during and after showers. Also if you have any windows in your bathroom open them while bathing.
• When you first buy a shower curtain, wash it with salt water. It will never go moldy.
• Use after shower sprays like this one.
If your problem area is bigger than 10 sq. feet you may need to call a professional.
