Recurring Clogs and Their Causes

Clearing a clogged drain is one thing. Having the same drain clog again a few weeks later is another.
A recurring clog often means that the original blockage wasn’t completely removed — or that another problem inside the drain or sewer line is causing it to return. Instead of repeatedly treating the symptom, identifying the source of the problem can help you find a longer-lasting solution.
At Bob Oates, here are the most common reasons why we see homeowners experience recurring drain clogs
Watch for Buildup Inside Your Drain Lines
Grease, food particles, and other debris can gradually collect along the inside of a drain pipe. As the opening becomes narrower, it becomes easier for additional material to get caught and form another blockage.
This is one reason a drain may seem fine immediately after a minor clog is cleared, only to begin draining slowly again later.
Professional drain cleaning can remove buildup more thoroughly and restore better flow through the line. Depending on the type and location of the blockage, a plumber may recommend drain snaking, hydro jetting, or another appropriate cleaning method.

Proper setup and coordination by the techs at Bob Oates, and essential for safe and effective hydro jetting services.
Keep Hair and Non-Flushable Items Out of Drains
Sometimes the source of repeated clogs is what continues to enter the plumbing system.
Hair is a common problem in bathroom sinks, tubs, and showers because it can combine with soap and other material inside the drain. Drain screens can help catch hair before it enters the pipe.
Toilets present another concern. Wipes, paper towels, cotton swabs, feminine hygiene products, and other non-flushable items can become lodged in plumbing and contribute to stubborn blockages. As a general rule, toilets should be used for human waste and toilet paper rather than as a disposal system for household items.
Check for Tree Roots in Sewer Lines
Tree roots are another potential cause of recurring drainage problems, particularly in areas with mature trees and older underground sewer lines.
Roots naturally seek moisture and can enter a sewer pipe through cracks, deteriorated joints, or other openings. Once inside, they can continue growing and catch waste and debris moving through the line.
Removing the immediate root blockage can restore flow, but it is also important to determine how the roots entered the pipe. Depending on the condition of the sewer line, additional repair may be recommended to address the underlying opening and help prevent the problem from returning.

Identify Damaged or Misaligned Pipes
Sometimes the problem isn’t what is going down the drain at all.
A cracked, offset, sagging, or otherwise damaged sewer pipe can interfere with normal wastewater flow. Debris may repeatedly collect at the damaged area, resulting in clogs that return even after the line has been cleared.
This is where a camera inspection can provide valuable answers. By viewing the inside of the line, a plumbing professional can look for damaged pipe, root intrusion, buildup, obstructions, and other conditions that may be contributing to the problem.

Pay Attention to Multiple Slow or Clogged Drains
One slow sink may indicate a localized blockage. Several drains slowing down or backing up around the same time can point to a problem farther along in the plumbing or sewer system.
Warning signs may also include gurgling toilets when another fixture drains, wastewater backing up into a tub or shower, and clogs that repeatedly return after you clear them.
These symptoms are worth investigating rather than repeatedly treating each fixture separately.
